Higher medical and pharmaceutical education in Bucharest began more than a century ago.

Carol Davila, a Romanian physician of French origin, laid the foundations of medical education in Romania together with Nicolae Kretzulescu, founding the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1857.

The Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest opened its doors to students on 22 November 1869, and its building was inaugurated on 12 October 1903.
